After growing up here in historic St. Augustine, and obtaining my college degree at Wesleyan College, I started my teaching career in high school English in the Atlanta Inner City School District. My husband’s business transfer to Los Angeles, however, caused a career realignment. I prepared by taking postgraduate courses in business and accounting at UCLA. I obtained my start in real estate in 1985 with a privately-owned investment group. Over the next 18 years (becoming corporate Vice President by 1989) I handled all phases of real estate acquisition, due diligence, contract negotiation and asset management for a portfolio that grew to a total of sixty residential communities, commercial stores, artist lofts, single family homes, our office building, and two water and sewer companies in ten states.
After relocating to Austin in 1996, I was hired by a prominent attorney who was building his own real estate portfolio in Central Texas. In my years with both portfolios, I also addressed municipal bodies for zoning changes, supervised legal strategy for defending our properties from eminent domain, served on a rent control board in New Jersey, obtained certification for affordable housing, coordinated project rehabs for takeovers and turnarounds, and wrote all Standard Operating Procedures, employment policies and all press releases.
But over the years the lure of my original hometown, increasingly popular as a less stressful alternative to booming metropolitan areas, was the equivalent to a siren call. As a result, in 2010 I happily returned to St. Augustine to join my brother brokerage firm, St. Augustine Realty, to continue the Barnes family avocation in this field, started here on historic St. George Street by our great-grandfather in 1895. Four generations later, we still have a presence in the historic city center, serving all who are attracted to the many attractive lifestyle opportunities St. Augustine presents. The Barnes tradition, with three generations of leadership as past presidents of the St. Johns County/St. Augustine Board of Realtors guarantees you diligent, detailed, ethical, and loyal service for all your real estate needs!
