Winter in St. Augustine, Florida

Known as the Sunshine State for a reason, Florida is one of the best places to spend the winter months! ☀️ St. Augustine, in particular, has many great things to do if you’re looking for fresh air, educational stimulation, or just relaxing outdoors amidst the holiday rush. Known as the oldest city in the United States, various unique historical and cultural avenues exist. Not to mention the beautiful beaches and tropical climate that can help give a sense of calm in a chaotic time of year. With a little bit of everything for the whole family to enjoy, St. Augustine has a warm and inviting atmosphere all winter long that makes for a great winter destination.

The winter months tend to be milder, with average temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s. During this time of year, the city is quiet, and visitors will find fewer crowds. This makes it a great time to explore the city’s many attractions while enjoying the laid-back atmosphere.

There are plenty of options for those looking to explore St. Augustine’s rich history. The Castillo de San Marcos is an impressive 17th-century fort that is both a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Open all year round, there are several guided tours offered where you will learn about some of St. Augustine’s earliest history. Visitors can also experience the city’s colonial past by heading to the Plaza de la Constitucion, which is the historic center of the city and offers some great walking opportunities to other nearby historical sites and some excellent window shopping if you’re still looking for that perfect gift.

Nature lovers will also find plenty to do in St. Augustine this time of year. The city is home to Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, known for its various native and exotic plants and animals that you can explore firsthand. With numerous trails to explore, you’re sure to find some peace and quiet while taking in all the sites and making room for the next holiday meal! Anastasia State Park is another great option to get outside, too, and is known as a great place to go birdwatching. Though sometimes thought of as a solo activity, birdwatching is something the whole family can enjoy by making it an eye-spy race to find unique species! ?

Of course, no visit to St. Augustine is complete without a visit to the beach. St. Augustine Beach is one of the most popular spots for sunbathing and swimming, while St. Johns County Ocean Pier offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean if you’d rather keep your feet dry. However, if you’re looking for something a little more unique, you’ll want to check out the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum for some amazing views to go with your local history lesson.

Mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and plenty of attractions to explore make St. Augustine an ideal winter vacation destination and will help ensure that your home is the must-visit place each holiday season—your family is bound to want to visit you every holiday season with so much to do!
